The Journey

You be the judge!  In a world where there’s no real system of justice for regular people living regular lives - and the cosmic judge of Karma is often slow, or even invisible to our eyes - we are our own executor of justice!  Set solid boundaries for yourself about what is fair, just, good, kind, and acceptable, according to your own morality and standards of behavior.  YOU get to decide if something is fair, just, and cool with you, or if it isn’t.  And if it isn’t, your justice looks like deciding to fight for yourself.  Stand up for your own rights, your fair treatment, and your freedom!

In the case of you or I - vs -  the jerk at the supermarket, or the toxic relationship, or the friend who stabbed us in the back, there’s no system of justice to deal with these things.  In the work place, there may be some actual protection, but sometimes even that system is weak.  Karma can be a comforting concept, but ultimately we don’t know how the universe is dealing with them, if we've separated from them and live our lives elsewhere.  We’re not necessarily going to get the satisfaction of knowing if the person or un-just system gets what they deserve.  They may just keep doing wrong and keep getting away with it, or they may actually see consequences for their behavior.  Certainly, the way they move through the world is going to continue to produce terrible fruit and many unfortunate events for them, if they keep acting the way they have been.  And yes, that MAY make them more miserable, driving them into the karma forged by their own hands.  But truly, we may never know - and crucially, maybe it’s just better if we DON’T.  Because dwelling on it only increases the burden of anger and vitriol we are already carrying!

Ruminating on revenge or comeuppance doesn’t help us improve our own hearts and lives after being treated unjustly.  Even if the rumination feels comforting in our imaginations at the time, it won’t heal us.  It won’t keep us safe.  It won’t ultimately help us learn and live a happier more fulfilled life.  Believe me, I’ve done much more than my fair share of dreaming of the offender’s inevitable failure and suffering justly under their own Karma… and all it made me was more bitter, not any better.  What DID work was extracting myself from unsavory situations and making the bold choice to simply move forward with my life.  Easier said than done, especially in circumstances of severe mistreatment - but the age old adage “living well is the best revenge” is not just some quote that pissed off divorced people say when they’re at the club - it’s actually TRUE!  And it is often our greatest form of justice, that we can offer to ourselves!

So, whether getting your justice means standing up to the mistreatment, being direct, and seeking a resolution where the other party plays fair or does face a consequence - or, you decide your justice looks like you walking away from that environment or person - actions have consequences, and you are allowed to lay that out in your life as firm boundaries - “strike 3, you’re out” is a fair rule.  And ultimately, holding your head high and living your best life after mistreatment says, to YOURSELF,  “I am not defined by this - I deserve what is good and bright for myself - I create a life that I love - I am powerful.  I am Justice.”
